When a really great dream shows up, grab it!

by Sunny Lam on May 8, 2009

“When a really great dream shows up, grab it!”

Those were the words of Google co-founder Larry Page. It was that phrase that really struck me. If you want to really live, you’ve got to be willing to reach for it and seize it (ethically of course).

You know when I was in high school my old gym teacher, Mr. Perovic once said that “its better to reach for the stars and land in the trees, then reach for the tree tops and only land on the ground.” (Well I pray it was Mr. Perovic anyway :) )

As Larry tells us, he didn’t even realize that he’d end up creating Google. What I took note of was the fact that he had an idea and put it down. It takes thousands of ideas coming out of your brain before you find the ones which really matter.

Google Founder’s Inspirational Commencement Speech (Video): “Google co-founder Larry Page delivered the Spring 2009 commencement address at the University of Michigan yesterday, the same university at which he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering. Page used the opportunity to humbly tell the story of his success, along with that of Google itself.”

Fail 1000 Times to Be Successful?

by Sunny Lam on April 22, 2009

Here’s an excellent video on making mistakes in order to succeed by Tim Ferriss (the author of the controversial Four Hour Workweek) and Ramit Sethi (author of NYTime best seller “I Will Teach You to Be Rich.” Tim also makes a telling point about marketing.

It really emphasizes some key challenges and issues that entrepreneurs or anyone for that matter really ought to face up front: if you really want to succeed, you’ve got to make mistakes and learn from them.

Bottom line: make mistakes double time (to learn faster), work hard, hard, harder (towards a specific goal) and never give up. And don’t forget to evaluate yourself.

That’s what it takes to be highly successful in your own eyes if not in the eyes of others.

(Of course you might want a peaceful cottage instead somewhere in the mountains and that’s okay too.)
