Recent work by some scientists down in California are telling us that kindness, trust and helping each other out is what allows us humans to survive. In fact, they’re finding that the gene for the “cuddle hormone” plays a huge factor and that the more you give, the more respect you get. You don’t believe it? You should for 2 reasons – both using social media examples.

Social scientists build case for ’survival of the kindest’: “Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, are challenging long-held beliefs that human beings are wired to be selfish. In a wide range of studies, social scientists are amassing a growing body of evidence to show we are evolving to become more compassionate and collaborative in our quest to survive and thrive.”

FACEBOOK, TWITTER & SOCIAL MEDIA

Why have online social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube become so big? One of the reasons is that it allows us to share, connect and join in a community more easily than ever especially since it’s so difficult to find time to do so in person. Think of the time starved mom or the workaholic dad.

Humans need the connection even if a lot of it has moved online. People are able to find and reconnect with old friends and family who live half across the world.

These tools have allowed humans to get a level of connection, collaboration and sharing that was never possible in the past and it can happen across nearly all walks of life. The only requirement is the ability to access the Internet to enter the new “information wave”.

If humans are changing to have more kindness, sharing and community then social media is the next step of this change (as long as technology continues along the way it’s doing now)

TRUST AGENTS

Some of the strongest examples of how kindness and trust wins people incredible influence can be found with souls like Chris Brogan, Brian Clark, Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk and Guy Kawasaki. All of them are influential because of their dedication to community, to sharing knowledge and information and helping others.

Are there others? I’m sure you can think of a few more people like them.

This point as you can tell follows closely with the first point since all of these people have used and are very good at being part of the social media community. The Internet and social media have allowed them to share their passion and knowledge to thousands if not millions of people worldwide in ways that would never have been possible 50 years ago.

Need help on how to make things like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube work for you? Let us know, we can lend a hand.

How Facebook/Internet Don’t Make You Lonely

According to a recent PEW survey, Internet, mobile phones, Facebook and Twitter don’t actually increase loneliness at all. In fact, the survey finds that people using these things actually have more varied and interesting social circles (compared to your real life ones for some) — you might talk with people you’d never have bothered or had time to know in real life.

Social Isolation and New Technology | Pew Internet & American Life Project: “This Pew Internet Personal Networks and Community survey finds that Americans are not as isolated as has been previously reported. People’s use of the mobile phone and the internet is associated with larger and more diverse discussion networks. And, when we examine people’s full personal network – their strong and weak ties – internet use in general and use of social networking services such as Facebook in particular are associated with more diverse social networks.”

You can listen to the lead author of the PEW study Keith Hampton right here.

For me personally, online social media serves as a lifeline to the real world and to real people especially during extremely busy times (i.e. crazy grant writing or writing reports). What do you think about the results of this survey? Do you agree?

February 23, 2009

Need a good Mac OS X Twitter client? I’d go for Syrinx. It’s a new one among those I found on Versiontracker. It has the visual interface I’m looking for unlike TwitterPost.
