A PEW survey back in 2002 already tells us the obvious: working people (whoever and whatever age they are) are using the Internet for more than fun — it’s being used to make serious decisions, do research and get stuff done (or learn more). In fact, after a year they start spending “less” time on it. It could be that they’ve settled into a rhythm or have gotten real efficient (i.e. they’ve set up a system they know like the back of their hand).
Getting Serious Online: As Americans Gain Experience, They Pursue More Serious Activities | Pew Internet & American Life Project: “As Internet users gain experience online, they increasingly turn to the Internet to perform work-related tasks, to make purchases and do other financial transactions, to write emails with weighty and urgent content, and to seek information that is important to their everyday lives. Over the course of a year, people’s use of the Internet gets more serious and functional. Internet users do more kinds of things online after they gain experience, especially related to their jobs, even as they spend a bit less time online during their typical sessions.”
